  • A hawk-faced old man, barely breathing, barely alive. Grandfather. You feel a rush of tangled emotions looking at him.
    The old man is clearly at the very brink of death, and you feel a sudden and intense kinship with him that draws you nearer to him. His eyes open as you hover over him, and he says, "Margaret?" in such a wondering tone, and then without warning, you are in the old man.

    It's a maelstrom of emotions: terror of death, fear of living, memories of love and lust and loss, winning and losing...

    But one emotion stands out sharp and clear above the rest: regret. Terrible, gnawing regret about Margaret. About you. He remembers standing over your shaking, small form with the belt. He remembers the embarrassment he felt at your appearance, and how petty that seems to him now. Why had he imprisoned a child because of something beyond her control?

    Regret old man.

    The old man breathes out a deep, rattling breath, and with it ejects you.

    You are again in the Master bedroom. The old man takes one more wheezing breath, and his eyes glass over. He's dead.
