DavidW says, "The Crew is a horror game but "very short"."

Jacqueline says, "Hm."

DavidW says, "We sorta have a backlog of horror games, unfortunately."

DavidW says, "The Wolf is more fairy tale-ish."

Jacqueline says, "Oh, that’s not the issue. Just wondering if it’ll be a one hour game."

DavidW asks, "Should I load it up?"

Jacqueline says, "Sure"

DavidW >> load sleepmask thecrew

Storeroom

They laughed at me and said my calculations were wrong. They said my trajectory would miss Nostreperes. They are just nitwits and idiots.

Me and my crew will prove them all wrong. And he who laughs last laughs best!

The Crew
An interactive horror short story by Olaf Nowacki
Release 6 / Serial number 211102 / Inform 7 build 6M62 (I6/v6.33 lib 6/12N)
Type "about" for credits and other information.

Storeroom
The storeroom is a long windowless tube made of metal. It is high enough for a small man to stand upright comfortably. Nets hang from the curved walls and contain the food supplies.

The supplies here are slowly running out. But that’s not a problem, because your journey will soon reach its destination.

There is a round security door in the northern wall.

DavidW >> x me

Storeroom

> X ME

You look at yourself. You look pretty unkempt. On board, you don’t have the same opportunities for personal hygiene as usual. But at least you’re well fed.

>

DavidW >> i

Storeroom

> I

You are carrying nothing.

>

DavidW >> open door

Storeroom

> OPEN DOOR

It seems to be locked.

>

DavidW >> x door

Storeroom

> X DOOR

In the middle of the round door is a wheel with which the door can be opened and closed. A rod is wedged in the wheel, preventing it from being turned.

>

DavidW >> take rod

Storeroom

> TAKE ROD

The metal rod is wedged in the wheel, but with a little effort you can get it out. Now the wheel can be turned again.

>

DavidW >> turn wheel

Storeroom

> TURN WHEEL

You open the round security door.

>

DavidW >> open it

Storeroom

> OPEN IT

It isn’t something you can open.

>

DavidW >> open door

Storeroom

> OPEN DOOR

That’s already open.

DavidW >> n

In Front of the Airlock

> N

In Front of the Airlock
This section is even tighter than the others because it houses the airlock. Next to the airlock hatch in the east, a large porthole is set into the wall through which one can see out. A passageway is leading to the north.

You can’t help but notice that the security door to the south looks pretty battered from this side.

>

DavidW >> look through porthole

In Front of the Airlock

> LOOK THROUGH PORTHOLE

Beyond the porthole, in the endless black nothingness of space you see Nostreperes, the pale planet. Soon the spaceship will enter its atmosphere. You have calculated the course to descend in smaller and smaller ellipses until you will finally land gently on the surface.

Floating in front of the large chalky white disc is one of your crew members in a spacesuit. That would have to be Robert, the most cautious of you.

>

DavidW >> x robert

In Front of the Airlock

> X ROBERT

Robert is only connected to the spaceship by a meagre supply hose. It seems as if he and the hose are floating aimlessly back and forth, like a flag in slow motion. What’s he doing out there? Did he suddenly find the fun in putting his life in danger?

You have to ask Harrison about it. Robert has to come back on board quickly, because he won’t make it through the atmosphere outside unscathed!

>

Jacqueline says, "He will burn up, that is bad."

DavidW says, "I think he’s dead."

DavidW >> n

Dormitory

> N

Dormitory
This is the area where you and your crew can rest and sleep. On each of the two long walls are two narrow bunks, one above the other. For most of your flight in all these months, you’ve had little else to do but kill time here. No wonder it smells like a men’s locker room.

To the north and south are passages to the other compartments.

Bill lies in his bunk and sleeps peacefully.

>

Jacqueline says, "Oh. Okay, that would make sense."

DavidW >> x bill

Dormitory

> X BILL

Bill lies in his bunk and sleeps with his mouth open. Fortunately, he isn’t snoring, which he usually does. He lies there quietly and peacefully. Maybe a side effect of him losing some weight?

"Big Bill" you used to say, but now he’s not so big any more. On the contrary, he has become quite thin. Maybe it’s a good thing that the journey took a little longer than planned. That aside, your calculations are correct and you have arrived at Nostreperes. Or soon, anyway. And once you’ve landed, it’ll be forgotten in no time that you had to ration food for a few weeks.

>

Jacqueline says, "I feel like you’re supposed to say, "He’s dead, Jim.""

DavidW >> wake bill

Dormitory

> WAKE BILL

Bill is sleeping so peacefully, you’d rather not wake him.

>

Jacqueline says, "There’s a lot of foreshadowing here."

DavidW says, "yeah"

DavidW >> n

Cockpit

> N

Cockpit
The cockpit is not sparsely equipped - it is not equipped at all. There are no controls or measuring instruments here, because the flight of the rocket was calculated by you personally and determined in such a way that no further readjustments are necessary. Therefore, there is only a large panorama window and two comfortable armchairs: one for you and one for Harrison, your first officer.

Harrison sits in his armchair and looks intently through the panorama window.

On the right side of the panorama window you can see Nostreperes slowly passing by.

Any moment now, the gravity of the pale planet must catch your ship and slowly but surely pull it towards its surface. Just as you have calculated.

>

DavidW >> x harrison

Cockpit

> X HARRISON

You look at Harrison from the side. He is the most talkative of the whole crew. But the grandeur of this moment seems to have rendered him speechless. Only his famous crooked grin seems to greet you..

Harrison suddenly turns his head towards you. His sunken eyes stare at you questioningly.

Nostreperes gradually disappears from your field of vision. Your spaceship makes no effort to tilt towards the planet’s surface, as it should.

But your calculations can’t be wrong!

>

Jacqueline says, "oopsie"

DavidW >> z

Cockpit

> Z

You are too psyched to do nothing.

Harrison is still staring at you. His eyes look dried up. His crooked grin is discomforting, with his tongue hanging half out of his mouth. His skin is torn from nose to cheek. It flaps down and the bone underneath is visible.

Through the panorama window, all that can be seen now is eternal blackness. Apart from your own breathing, there is not the slightest sound in the spaceship.

You feel like laughing to fill the void.

>

Jacqueline says, "Welp, guess we better go drown our sorrows in what’s left of the food cache."

DavidW >> laugh

Cockpit

> LAUGH

You just want to laugh.

Laugh at your arrogance.
Laugh at the fact that you’ve dragged your friends into it.

Laughing because you’d rather let them starve than share the food with them.
Laughing at the smell of decay from your rotting friends.

Laugh because it all did you no good and yet you too will soon starve.
Laugh because a some point you will be so hungry that you will start to eat their rotting flesh.

So you let out an ugly, throaty laugh with your eyes wide open.

*** Isn't that a "happy" ending? ***

Would you like to RESTART, RESTORE a saved game, QUIT or UNDO the last command?
>

DavidW says, "wow"

Jacqueline says, "I don’t think we’ll eat Harrison. He’s past his Best By date."

Jacqueline says, "I guess that game did not take an hour."

Jacqueline says, "It didn’t even take until the top of the hour."

DavidW says, "yeah. hm."

Jacqueline says, "Ten minutes."

Jacqueline says, "Maybe."
