1893: A World's Fair Mystery (2002)
For some reason, one of the mystic words of power which you learned when infiltrating the freemasons guild of Boston comes to mind, and you say it out loud. To your relief, nothing happens.
By request, this is a collection of responses to plugh in a multitude of IF works. Like xyzzy, plugh is another magic word from Adventrue, and sometimes you can use it in other works, usually just to see a silly response that the author has snuck in.
For my sanity's sake, and also because it looks nicer, I'm only listing the responses that belong only to plugh here. If a work gives the same response to plugh as it did for xyzzy, go look for it on the xyzzy responses page.

50 Shades of Jilting (2014)
[first time:] A hollow voice says "Here are your drinks." The server's prompt return surprises the two of you, but the arrival of your water gives you something to do with your mouth besides destroying your friendship, for at least a few moments. The server says "If you're not going to order anything else I'll just give you your bill and any time you're ready you can just come up to the counter and pay the fee fie foe foo." At mention of the bill, you subconsciously move your hand down to your wallet, only to find it missing! There's no one else in here, so it must have fallen out along the way. You advise Sam that they're on the hook for the bill, and Sam goes through a funny little dance of patting down pockets and investigating flaps and compartments, graduating to actually exploring the cracks and crevices in the back recesses of the booth, but to no avail: what are the odds that you've both misplaced your wallets this one fateful visit to a diner you've both gone to a thousand times? Sam says "I'm going to roll up my sleeves and take care of this." Sam: always in charge -- sometimes an admirable quality, sometimes a wearying one. Today it's convenient. Sam finds the server and explains the situation, then comes back to the table and fills you in -- "We could just add the drinks to a tab and pay it off next time, but I can't stand keeping track of things like that so I'm just going to nip around back and wash dishes for 20 minutes." "What, with your bare hands?" you reply. Sam lifts an eyebrow and disappears into the kitchen. You lift an eyebrow and disappear out the front.
*** A burdensome relationship: You won't get it up the steps. ***
69,105 Keys (2009)
My original title was always 69,105 Keys, but I brainstormed some other titles anyway. They were: Which Key?; The Count of Keys; Keygasm; Antechamber of Keys; Keys, Keys, Keys; and Qualia Control.
Ad Verbum (2000)
A sonorous voice, straining to sound hollow, delivers a short lecture. "The word 'plugh' contains the word 'gulp' spelled backwards, and thus is an interesting candidate for inclusion in a letter-palindrome. However, no one knows how to use this word in a sentence, and everyone knows how to use the word 'plug,' which actually is the word 'gulp' spelled backwards, so the usefulness of the word 'plugh' is actually quite limited."

The detective stepped cautiously south into the small closet. Dimly lit from an unseen source, the closet revealed a few stiff clothes on hangers and a toy or two but nothing remotely relevant to the case. Ed left the way he came, walking south back into the hallway.
He emerged in a well lit sitting room that smelled of magnolias and old fiber. Bending down, Ed examined a piece of stone stone. "This could come in handy," the detective mused as he picked it up.
Just then, a thief walked into the room from the northeast! Ed screamed and pulled the trigger on his AK-47. Too late ...
Thorfinn's Realm (1999)
Hmmm, that's funny. Nothing happens.
Tookie's Song (2002)
As you speak the magic word, three small holes open in a nearby wall. Out of the openings pour three conga lines of identical bright green pixies, complete with pointed ears, diaphonous fairy wings, and tiny green sombreros. The pixies fly in intricate formations as synthesizer music plays from somewhere, speeding around the room, flying faster and faster, pirhouetting and twirling. The music reaches an intense crescendo, and the pixies launch into a synchronized sombrero toss, flinging the little hats back and forth, until each of them catches a sombrero at the exact same instant that the music stops. You appluad, humming the catchy tune, while the pixies file back to the holes in the wall. They disappear into the darkness, and the holes are sealed over with rock, leaving no trace that they were ever there.
