  It looks electronic and (unsurprisingly) symmetrically spherical. Perhaps you could USE something on it.

  You can't really look directly into it too much, but it seems like one of those scanners that could pop up a force field, or make a really annoying noise, if you tried to cross it. REBUFF-UBER is written on it, just to discourage anyone with any ideas of running through.

  You're not sure of the deeper science, but it seems simple enough to USE it ON something (or just RAD something) when the time comes [if used once, add:] again, though it does seem slightly damaged[end if].

  It's a gray, high-tech card reader. There's a slot, in the middle, for inserting a card. It's bolted to the wall with four screws.

• BSE (1996)

  You can't have a proper adventure game these days without some special sci-fi gadget. In this case it resembles a microwave oven. It also sports a row of LEDs so it can flash them back and forth as it speaks in its predictably sarcastic monotone. Whoever built this one was well au fait with current trends and even painted a smiley face on the speaker. Lovely.

  The evil detector looks similar to a digital wristwatch. However, instead of telling you the time, it tells you how much evil power the evil wizard has absorbed. If it gets up to 275, the evil wizard can break free and take over the world. Currently, it reads [0 to 274].

  Your trusty wrist-mounted Science Machine. It'll scan just about anything if you tell if to SCAN something.

  The card reader has a small slot, just about the size of a USENET Cabal membership card.

• The Mage Wars: Statue (2003)

  It was a semi-flat rectangular box, mounted on the wall. It produced a very small, almost insignificant hum as it waited patiently for a security badge to be passed over it.

  This is a very large and complicated machine. The most prominent features are a large yellow button and an *EGG*-shaped hole, which you'll want to put the egg ON, not IN, because this is easier to code as a supporter than a container.

  • The scanner is switched off.
  • The scanner shows a TARDIS holding bay on Gallifrey.
  • The scanner shows a room with white walls and ceiling. The floor has been painted with a pattern of triangles.
  • The scanner shows a strip of bare land on the edge of the forest.
  • The scanner shows A beach bounded by a cliff, sea, and a barbed wire fence.
  • The scanner shows A gloomy passageway.
  • The scanner shows A landing, with marble steps leading up and down from it.
  • The scanner shows A corridor, with icicles hanging down from the ceiling.

  A fairly large flatbed scanner, silver in color, sits on one of the tables. Unfortunately, it appears to be as dead as every other machine here.

  The scanner, a silvery box with one simple lens, sits about two meters high to the right of the waystation door.

• The Weapon (2001)

  A thin, cylindrical, half-meter-long rod, the electropulse probe is a common Yi device for working with certain kinds of Yi technology. The subtle interplay of electric and magnetic fields found in mechanisms can be stimulated with the probe, useful for detection, analysis, or calibration. At one end are two control sensors.
