  A rather old fashioned radio. Mr Donlon, the Technical Graphics teacher, sometimes uses it to help the pupils concentrate as they draw. Soft soothing music provides a calm athmosphere and aids creativity.

  A cute two-knob radio with a surprising art nouveau aesthetic. It was by far the most stylish thing in the room.

  Celia recognised the numbers displayed in the tiny tuning window. The wireless had been tuned to the BBC Home Service.

  The wooden housing of the radio resembles those you've seen in films set in the 1940s. But the entire radio is in such good shape that you're unsure whether this is a well-preserved antique or a replica.

  It looks like a radio or voice transmitter module, with a speaker and a switch, but no other buttons.

• Man Overboard!!! (2006)

  A small grey radio that is betling out tune after tune. The on/off knob appears to be broken.

  A typical police radio, occasionally crackling with orders from dispatch.

  It's a 2-way radio that allows you to communicate important information with fellow truckers while on the road, such as how to avoid the bears. If you set it to the right frequency, sometimes you can even trick the bears and send them off on a wild goose chase.... which means less hassle for a trucker like you.

  The radio is fairly old, but someone's taken good care of it. Jaunty, popular songs emit clearly from the speakers. Just loud enough to be annoying. The songs are interspersed with newscats in a language you don't understand.

  It's a HadesCorp WaveMaster 2000 portable transistor radio. It has a dial that lets you set the frequency, and a switch for turning the radio on and off (the switch is currently in the off position). On the back is a small compartment.
