  A post-card showing a rolling vista of Yorkshire countryside, taken from Skebdale Pike. A few unintelligible notes and messages have been scrawled on the back in slightly smudged fountain pen:

  You lean in towards the front of the box, to take a peek--after all, it IS in the sunlight, and you're not REALLY READing it, are you...??...

  It looks like a mail-in order for a case of extra-bacon flavored doggie treats. Its edges are embossed in rainbow colors, and it smells like it came right out of a box of treats. It says --

  "Thank you for your purchase of a case of our Porkie's Specially-Made Extra-Bacon Flavored Doggie Treats. As a ONE-TIME ONLY Special Offer, with this card, we will send you, FREE of charge, a RETRACTABLE LEASH, with a BUILT-IN POOP SCOOPER, equipped with bags! Just mark the blank next to your preferred color, fill in the blanks with your name and address, and drop this card in the mail. (Available while supplies last.)...

  My Snuggums just loves your treats, especially the bacon!! I have tried to get him to eat other treats, but he seems to prefer bacon from the table! Your product is the only manufactured treat he will eat! THANK YOU! It saves me from having to make bacon all the time!

  After having essentially "read" someone else's mail, you shut the mailbox, as you look around again.

  It's a sturdy bit of card stock, now warped with age. The photo on its face depicts the city in its former glory. A year is stamped in the corner: 2016.

  A faded postcard with a picture of Big Ben on it. You'd guess the picture dates from the first quarter of the century.

• The Day we got a pet (2018)

  Oh, it's from your old friend the Venusian warrior woman! (She was in "The Day I died", remember? No? Oh well.) She lived with your for a while and the moved back to Venus to become a tour guide at the Mausoleum of the 140th. You and Paul agreed you should VISIT her some day.

  The postcard looks very old. The stamp on it depicts an old-fashioned aeroplane.

• A Good Breakfast (1997)

  The card is addressed to you, informing you that your water supply will be cut off for the whole of today for vital repair work.

• Motel California (2011)

  The tourist bought a postcard to send home. The front shows the Motel California in its prime, when it was painted and new and surrounded by palm trees. The back of the postcard has the address half-filled out and the message, "FRSILOFYOMH".

  On the postcard is a picture of a hanged man. You flip it over, and scrawled in blood-red ink are the words, "LOOK BEHIND YOU."
