  Her slack, pallid skin looks as if it has seen little more than the inside of a cave for most of her life. She stares at you silently with disturbingly large and watery eyes.

  [She or He] -- you correct yourself, [he or she] -- hasn't even bothered to tie [his or her] hair back in a tight bun, or perch severe-looking glasses on the end of [his or her] aquiline nose (which turns out not to be aquiline), ready to be loosed and removed respectively to reveal a surprisingly beautiful young [woman or man]. [Man or Woman]. S\he is simply rather bored-looking, and somewhat gender-ambiguous, sort of youth.

  Every time you examine the librarian, the gendered words flip to the other option.

  No makeup; no jewelry either, unless you count a pair of tortoise-shell eyeglasses. Hair color indeterminate, most of it yanked back so tightly you'd need a crowbar to get another hairpin in. Undoubtedly an excellent librarian, one of those Dewey Decimal devotees responsible for the spread of civilization as we know it.

  The Librarian is sitting behind her desk, apparently busy at work, but eyeing you with suspicion just the same. She looks just like what you think a librarian is supposed to look like. Glasses, a high-collared white blouse, blond hair - in a bun, and nervously nibbling on the end of her pen.

  Oh, how you long to tell Tilly how you feel. Her silken hair, her delicate nose, that coy manner she adopts when talking to you... But when it comes down to it, why would she like a dumpy, plump girl such as yourself?

  A woman who's physical description charitably matches "battle-axe". Her brown hair is tightly wrapped in a bun. Upon noticing you, she brings her finger to her mouth in a shushing motion.

  The receptionist looks like he's probably a grad student—mid twenties, flannel shirt, about four days since he's shaved. He's intently studying a weighty-looking textbook.

  Letum the Librarian is a short, wizened old man with spectacles that seem to take up most of his face. Tufts of white hair jut from behind his ears (and, truth be told, from within them as well).
