The man, like all other employees of Heaven, is an angel in his white suit, wings and halo. He has his sleeves rolled up and is wiping. down the bar like only a barman can.

The bartender is working to perfect a back-of-house look: tattoos on forearm and neck, dirty-blonde dreadlocks kerchiefed back, a beard that makes it hard to read his age or mood. A broad face, stub-nosed. A broad body in a metal T-shirt. With deeper wrinkles or a few extra inches of height, he'd give off an air of menace; as it is he mostly gives off an air of watching the clock until he can sneak out back for a weed break.

The curls that poke out beneath the hat look none too clean and he's short more than a few teeth, but his broadly expressive face shows a certain honesty. This man wants to take your money, but at least he won't lie to you about his intentions, and he'll give you a decent mug of ale in return. Sometimes that's all you can ask for.

Lara, landlady of the Rampart Inn, is a pleasant middle-aged woman with a kind red face and a cotton dress. Being the proprietor of the town's inn makes her de facto social worker, counsellor and confessor to its residents.
