  Densely growing bamboo of about twelve feet in height. It is of a very dark green, almost black - no psychadelic colours here, although the Phil thinks the bamboo seems to be twisting into strange shapes when he isn't looking directly at it. When he looks directly, of course, it is innocently straight again.

  The bamboo pointer. Used by the Hierarchy to designate who is to do what, where. Used by Conservatory youth as a neat whacking stick, blowgun and breathing tool. Oh the trouble you used to get into with that thing.

  The stick of bamboo is thin and supple. It’s about four feet long, and a few green sprigs of leaves are sprouting from it.

• Not Just an Ordinary Ballerina (1999)

  The bamboo lattice looks to have been lashed together with no plan and no engineering expertise whatsoever. Large poles and small sticks angle off in every conceivable direction. Some of them appear sturdy enough to bear your weight, but appearances can be deceiving.
