THINK Responses[top] [menu]

It occurred to me in January 2018 to add responses to THINK to my responses project. I'm only recording generic thinking here; responses to THINK ABOUT something would have to be its own page.

1958: Dancing With Fear (2017)

[THINK gives an in-context hint in this game. For example:]

  • Thinking: "Let's crash this party. I had that invitation in my hand a second ago, where did I leave it... did I put it in my purse...?"
  • [etc.]

69,105 Keys (2009)

You think about nothing in particular.

77 Verbs (2020)

You've been doing a lot of that recently, and it hasn't helped much.

Also: 85 Verbs; The Magpie Takes the Train.

9:05 (1999)

You try to concentrate.

The Abbey (2008)

They say reflection is good for the soul.

Absence of Law (2017)

Thinking...

[Commands are listed.]

Thinking is all I can do, Dr. Law.

Note that the AI continues to make comments about thinking in subsequent turns.

Across the Stars (2007)

  • It might be a good idea to get out of the rack.
  • You need to report to your duty station.
  • [etc.]

Adventurer's Consumer Guide (2007)

  • "If that monster needed glasses, it would be pretty weird glasses."
  • "Tentacle monsters. Why does it always have to be tentacle monsters. Or zombie wolfs. Or parrot women. Or sentient livers. Or kamikaze sheep. Or jumping oaks. Or..."
  • "I guess I should explore the caves now."
  • "Those barbarians think they are so though! Just because they can beat up anybody!"

The response to THINK depends on your current situation. (TODO: Research this more!)

The Adventures of Houdini (2012)

You sit still and think very very hard.

Okay, done. Can you run around some more now?

The Adventures of the President of the United States (2003)

You can't think of anything.

Ailihphilia (2018)

A knihtg (sic) appears and taps you on the shoulder, and you suddenly recall big-picture things.

As far as you know, there are no challenges where you were pretty sure what to do, but you didn't have the right item yet.

Other things to try, in random order:
You need to blast through the KaoS oAK north of here, eventually.

You may want to examine this item you haven't, yet: the Darer Ad. You can also try SCE RECS to see scenery you haven't examined.
You don't have any last lousy points to figure that've been clued in-game.

This response changes as you progress through the game.

Aisle (1999)

You'll have to say what you want to think about.

THINK ABOUT [something] is a more useful command.

Akkoteaque (2013)

[cycling:]

  • You think about all the wonderful things you would be doing if you weren't on this horrible island. Like eating cheese. Have you seen any cheese on this island? No. You have not.
  • You take a moment to think about your dead parents. And how lucky they are not to be here.
  • You think about some random thing. Does it really matter what?

Alabaster (2008)

  • You haven't discovered much yet.
  • You think back over the things that you know:
You and she have a pact.

  • [etc.]

Responses to THINK evolve as the story progresses.

  • [etc.]

You offer up your prayers to God. If he hears you, he does not respond.
  • What a good idea.

Along The River (2010)

Lots of things happen at once, you know. Lots of things. In fact, everything you do seems to take the exact same amount of time, and happen all at once. It's so odd.

  • And what were you doing up until now - not thinking?
  • You think it might be a good idea to try HELP or HINT.

A Beginning (2004)

You ponder things, and why they are.

Belief (2012)

It's rather astonishing that you still can, considering the last thing you remember was the very start of what seemed likely to be a quite terminal encounter with the ground at high speed.

That's pretty much the first thing you remember, too, at least in any detail - there was some falling, and before that there was some kind of argument, and before that, just a blank space in your mind where a life ought to go.

The response is situation dependent.

About what, specifically?

Blue Lacuna (2008)

If you're not sure what to do, remember you can type LOOK or press enter alone to be reminded of your surroundings. Make sure you try typing any emphasized direction keywords you haven't explored or objects you haven't examined.

Asking other characters you meet about obstacles is also a good tactic. It also may help to sleep on your problem, particularly in a comfy, shady spot.

If you want specific hints, try asking on the newsgroup rec.games.int-fiction or e-mailing the address below.

Finally, if you encounter a bug or problem with the workings of the story, think something is unclear, or have suggestions, the author would love to hear from you. Please write to aaron@lacunastory.com or visit the above URL.

Bright Brave Knight Knave (2023)

You think about more specific challenges you've encountered and not solved, and what you've done and tried, and what you can do.

But you don't remember anything that could work later.

[NOTE: Bright Brave Knight Knave should indicate whenever you find the right rhyme but can't execute it yet. An asterisk or (+) will also appear in the score in the upper right. Until then, you can THINK to see things you figured but aren't quite ready to do yet.

This response evolves as you play.

If your display doesn't show bold characters, just check "topics" periodically to see any additions. There are opportunities in this game to really alter the course of events in the story. Multiple traversals can be narratively rewarding. Stay curious. If you're stuck, examining things usually yields clues.

Meet your colleague Slango at Counterfeit Monkey

This response changes during the game, listing your current goals as appropriate.

The Cove (2000)

When was the last time you where here? It must be going on six years now. You remember everything about that day; how lovely it was in the morning, how clear the skies and sea were, how much you had been looking foward to it. A tear forms in the corner of your eye only to be whisked away by a sudden gust of wind. If only memories could be as easily removed.

Cragne Manor (2018)

[if on Railway Platform:] You're worried about Peter. He was supposed to be back by now, but you haven't heard a word from him since he went to his family's old house in Backwater. You've never been there before; he doesn't like to talk about his family much, and you got the impression there was some bad blood there.
You're probably just being silly, right? He'll turn up and you'll both laugh about how worried you were. Probably his family are perfectly nice, normal people.

In most locations, the command responds with Inform's default: What a good idea. I have only checked the first four locations.

Of course I was thinking. It's part of the job description, you know!

You do not need to do that.

Finish your Foe! (2018)

  • [when foe is Piet:]

"I don't want to play." you mutter, sitting down by the weeds. You think about how your family lost the yard in the first place, how uncle screwed you all over. And once again, you come to the conclusion that it is, ultimately, your fault. If you hadn't blabbed, uncle would never have gotten the idea, you're sure. Piet sits down next to you, putting his arm around your shoulder and again tries to tell you that it isn't your fault.

*** But the certainty will remain. ***

  • [when foe is vampire queen:]

You pause to think. Your wife, husband, and children are free of the Shadow Ruby's curse now. Should you really still risk your life? Doesn't your family deserve that you abandon the battle to return to them? But you shake off these thoughts. Abandoning this fight would solve nothing. The red queen would just target your family again, and that time, she might just kill them. No. While you owe your family your save return, you also owe them to destroy this threat to their safety. Not to mention that the red queen is a threat to the church of Hielon, the nearby City of Bridges, Kyr, yes, to the whole world.

*** You re-enter the battle with new vigour. ***

  • [when foe is shadow serpent:]

Turning to think about your predicament, your mind wanders to the old legends. It is said that the shadow serpent has a weak spot somewhere on its body... but how would anyone know? There is only one shadow serpent isn't there? If there is more than one shadow serpent, have you tracked down the one that destroyed your village? Does it matter, even? Then you hear a rustling from behind you and from in front of you. Two shadow serpents are flanking you, one biting into your legs and the other into your upper body. You thankfully do not live long enough to feel getting torn in two by the monsters.

    *** That answers a few questions. ***

First Things First (2001)

Hmmmmmm.

Fit For A Queen (2001)

[Your score has just gone up by five points.]

Further (2013)

Time passes.

Galatea (2000)

Your mind is a blank slate.

Gateway of the Ferrets (2019)

You ponder a bit on your circumstances.

You need to unlock the gateway somehow to escape.

It seems likely that you will need to befriend both ferrets. Each has abilities the other lacks, and they can probably help you get out.

The ferrets appear to be friendly and smart enough to understand basic requests. What sorts of things can you do to befriend them? Maybe you can play with them? Maybe you can make them laugh? Maybe you can pat them like little dogs? You recall the wisdom of Scooby-Doo; if only you had something like Scooby Snacks!

The pedestal seems significant. Perhaps there is more to find there. Maybe there are still secrets around the pedestal.

Your thoughts quickly spiral into nothing more than wordless rage and frustration.

Groove Billygoat (2014)

The minute you turn your attention in meta-fashion to the inner workings of your thoughts, they seem to shut down and grind to a halt, almost as if the gears in your brain have some sort of performance anxiety. You avert your attention to yourself so that you won't think yourself mentally incapable and go off the rails somehow.

Grubbyville (2016)

You haven't met anyone yet. But they are there. People with extra-EXTRA-curricular activities must be around.

I assume this response changes as the game progresses.

Hoosegow (2010)

You'd prefer not to. Too many memories of

  • [first time:] the war and how you came to oppose its ideology.
  • [second time:] how your plantation was torched.

I'll (2000)

It's hard to think when the world is a monster, bad to swallow you whole. But then, nobody ever said it would be easy. Easy come, easy go. Goin' places. Win, place, or show? Show us yer tits.

Somehow, thinking just isn't accomplishing much.

A sudden thunderous noise outside draws my attention, just in time to see a giant lizard's face peering through the window, and then a hand smashes through the ceiling, a giant lizard hand (paw? I wonder), and it grabs me, and the lizard's mouth is open, rows of glistening, slimy teeth, and my body is rent, torn asunder, I feel my blood spattering around this beast's mouth... and then I feel no more.

Junior Arithmancer (2018)

From what you remember, the Academy's entrance examinations are designed primarily to test your understanding of basic spell principles in a particular subject. Because of this, the spells that you see on the exams are created specifically for the exams; they're not general-purpose spells, and you're not expected to have seen them before.

For Arithmancy, the spells usually give you ways to form new numbers from old ones. Understanding this is the primary focus of the exam.

  • And not just because he's so young and innocent... there's also, you know, that nagging feeling that he is justified and you are not.

    (You are now somewhat concentrated.)

In fact, you have a sneaking suspicion that none of the other witches have either. But it's super cool to talk about and stuff.

But it ends with her. I want to remember it from the beginning. So that's where I'll start.

My name is Stark. Captain Jon Stark. And I work for SciCorps. SciCorps: The galaxy-spanning mega-corporation that is in charge of secretly monitoring promising new alien species that dot our corner of the universe, all in the hopes of one day inviting them to join the League of Sentient Systems.

My current assignment is at Orion 3, where SciCorps has been keeping an eye on a pre-industrial civilization of a highly spiritual people. I work in Central Control of Station One, a space station orbiting Orion 3 working as the primary base of operations. Spiral (2012)

  • [at very beginning:]
    • For a moment, everything is blank. Tabula rasa. You could be anyone - a terrorist, a psychopath, a drug addict, a prostitute, a mugger. But then memories flood in all at once, as if you'd asked to borrow a lighter and got your house set on fire instead. You're Helen Wright. You can picture the faces of your mum and dad and your older sister Mary in your house in London; you can see the bright white walls of that house - everything white and pristine, like a hospital; you can see yourself playing with dolls at the foot of your bed; you can see yourself telling Mary to leave you alone; you see the park, you're on the swings, you're down the slide, you're on your own, playing with the playground grass; you're at school, you're scribbling in your book, you're the last one out of the classroom, and the first one in. You're eight years old, and the memories are still coming...
    • Faster and faster, your memories are coming back, and you can't keep up with them. Then, suddenly, they stop. The last one is just an ordinary day on the London Underground and you're going to lectures. How did you get from there to here? That can't be the end - that can't have been the last thing that happened. Unless perhaps some random madman came along, beat you up and locked you in here. But who would want to kidnap you? There's nothing special about you - far from it.
    • You know who you are now: Helen Wright, just another horrible person. Your memories have come back, though apparently not all of them.
  • [as Helen in train:]
    • You'll still die, Helen. Soon it will all be over and you'll never have to feel afraid or lonely or confused or indeed anything. You can't see any way of killing yourself, but you hope that whatever mess you've got yourself into, it'll end the way you want it to - with finality.
    • You imagine breaking free of your binds and making a noose with one of the ropes, and hanging yourself from the lamp in the middle of the room. That would be pretty scary for the other guy, of course... You'd set him free too, obviously.
    • Time to take stock. Here you are, tied up, gagged, sitting on the floor in an iron train car, with only a load of dead wasps and a complete stranger who is similarly incapacitated for company. Now, what does this mean? Can you solve this one by induction? Stop being silly, Helen, this is bloody serious. It means you've been kidnapped. But why would that happen? You can't understand why a kidnapping of this magnitude would happen to a nobody like you. You would expect a random psychopath to just hack your limbs off and be done with it; if somebody is actually keeping you alive, it makes you think they need you for something.
    • What's going to happen when you need the toilet? You're fine at the moment - you're pretty dehydrated if anything - but this could get a hell of a lot more unpleasant an hour or two down the line.
    • A strange man who is about your age is right opposite you. Of course it's silly - it's just you being hyperhypersensitive, but you can't stop the thought from flashing through your mind. What if it's him? But you're pretty sure it's not... you're pretty sure his hair was lighter than that. You tell yourself that it was.
    • You dread to think what those tubes on the walls are for. It's definitely not ventilation. The air seems to feel even more stale than it was before.
    • You imagine explaining all this to Amanda. Would she believe you?

"Hallucinations are a rare side-effect of the medication," you can imagine her saying. "But if it wasn't a hallucination, then you should really be telling this to the police." Oh, the rationality of it! You can just hear her saying it.
    • You had amnesia, but it didn't last long. And you're still not really sure if you've got all of your memory back. Still, the evidence suggests that you had a very nasty blow to the head. Therefore, what happened was this: some sickos clubbed you, tied you up, gagged you, threw you in this train, and are transporting you to a fate unknown. Perhaps you will be trafficked as a slave... Oh God no. Helen, you know you deserve some pain... but do you really deserve that much? Perhaps the world is just unfair like that. Yeah, that must be it.
  • [as Helen in dream world: acts like EXAMINE ME.]

Stuff of Legend (2020)

You are a village idiot. Thinking is not your strong suit.

Sub Rosa (2015)

You always prefer to reflect on a good book.

Sugarlawn (2019)

It was only a matter of time, really, before someone thought to exploit the escape room craze in the form of reality TV. The addition of game show elements was not surprising in retrospect, either: Solve more puzzles and find more valuables before time runs out, earn more cash.

It's still not entirely clear how the producers managed to secure some of the locations for episodes - Hearst Castle, the Biltmore Estate, Graceland, the White House (!) - but the show's massive popularity over the last five years has surely helped.

Today was your third tryout for Antique Escapes. Mom warned you that dressing as a chicken was too obvious, but apparently host Terri Boz liked the classic game show look. At least there weren't more fowl auditioning for the show, unlike the two other Princess Leias last time.

Regardless, Terri chose you, and now here you are! Time to strut your stuff.

  • She's absently rolling the koosh in her palm as she reads. Its rubber tendrils slip through her fingers like hair. Like your hair. You can't stop watching.
  • She read to you from the Elizabeth Bishop book once. Beneath that loved / and celebrated breast. "Don't know why what's beneath is so interesting," she said, "it's...." She moved her hand up to cup you. You never did find out how the poem ended.
  • Lily is quite understanding about tea bags, really. Sometimes you're just too tired for more than a quick boil and steep. And you've learned that the other kind of tea really can be nicer.
  • [etc.]

I'd be quoting much of the game if I included all the responses to THINK. But here's the first few, just to give you an idea of how it's using the command. Also, these thoughts will come unbidden while you're performing other actions as well.

Tethered (2018)

That would be a good first step.
(Try HINT if you are desperate.)

Tex Bonaventure and the Temple of the Water of Life (2013)

No time for thinking! Now is the time for ACTION! ...unless it really is time for thinking. Thinking about what action to take. That's a good thought. But after thinking... ACTION!

Tookie's Song (2002)

[Cycle down, repeating the last:]

  • Ah, one of your favorite activities! You settle in for a good, long, hard think.

Images of loved ones pass through your mind...

The thinking didn't seem to have helped.
  • You give it another shot. Thinking, thinking, thinking...

    Nothing, again.

A mathematician can think for hours about absolutely nothing.

Twilight in the Garden of Exile (2001)

  • [first time:]
You promptly run the recent memories through your mind: a hasty return from Sicily with the new play, your calling Sando, Ilya and Meredith, convincing them of the greatness of the act (you can be unnaturally persuasive at times), expounding for hours on what a hit it would make, ordering the arrangements - and collapsing from unbearable fatigue.

These are the thoughts Sando reads in your face. He smiles contentedly: "I am glad you remember it now. However, before we discuss the play itself, let me ask you a question: What is the real reason of your returning? Surely there must be more to that than just a new play - one of many you have written?"

Your face remains as calm and candid as ever: "My friend," you reply, "I am rather disappointed by your lack of faith in my new work's potential. I do believe that it is worth abandoning Sicily for."

Sando offers you a wise smile: "Far from challenging the notion, I cannot envision the possibility of your being unaware of the recent geopolitical developments in the region. Germany and Austria have voiced undisguised threats against our state; some even predict an invasion within days."

He is clearly beginning to suspect something, you realize; if so, your whole plan is under grave threat. Sando is not the one to fool with; it is time to divert his attention from the issue.

You yawn exaggeratedly: "As you know, politics fail to excite me the way they used to. These days, I am much more keen on art for art's sake."

The effect is all you could wish for: Sando's face goes red with rage. "I told you to quit yawning like that - " he growls.

  • [otherwise:]
    A splendid idea.

Ugly Oafs (2014)

Maybe once you get that first point, everything else will get untracked.

You haven't read any markers yet. They might help.
You haven't read any messaged markers yet. They might help.

This response evolves as you progress through the game.

Under the Cognomen of Edgar Allan Poe (2024)

Sometimes you wonder if you think too much.

Under They Thunder (2020)

Not much to think about yet. Try going inside for more help materials.

This response changes based on your progress.

Under, In Erebus (2010)

Your thoughts are your own, I assure you. I'm just here to HELP.

Uxmulbrufyuz (2017)

  • [if in Aphafaja:] You need to acclimate yourself...or something.
  • [if in Ebekelmenc:] There must be several ways to get rid of things.
  • [if in Igwivriqi:] Maybe you can accuse things of not being real. Or give them, or yourself, character. Or remember what they are.
  • [if in Uxmulbrufyuz:] Hmm. Maybe a usual prefix would work here. You could take charge, or make things poweless, or something.

Vague (2009)

You think hard about this location but no thoughts or memories arrive.

Vain Empires (2020)

To calm my nerves, I try to think of something pleasant, like the time

  • a colleague I particularly disliked got fired (footnote [number]) for misappropriating departmental funds. The amount of money involved was trivial, but it's the principle of the thing. If you're going to be an intelligence officer, you should at least know how to cover up a straightforward embezzlement scheme.
  • I had an intern in my office try to take over my job. That isn't the pleasant part; the pleasant part is that I had him reaassigned to a post in the middle of an ocean in the mortal realm. Because I'm not completely heartless, I even let him come up for air occasionally.
  • I had to give a deposition to the Oversight Committee. It wasn't a pleasant experience, and my testimony wasn't even that important, but it showed that I had finally arrived.

Varicella (1999)

You've already come up with your master plan -- now is the time to put it into action!

Ventilator (2016)

  • If only Steph was here... I shouldn't have yelled at her like that.
  • Maybe I should turn on that ventilator. Maybe that'll make me feel better...
  • Your mind wanders upon various topics in succession, but nothing comes of it.
  • [etc.]

Very Vile Fairy File (2019)

Here's general information you know from your experience so far: WET WOOD. You've got that zig zag rig rag. Maybe there's alliterative rhyming, here. What rhymes with WET WOOD?

You think about more specific challenges you've encountered and not solved, and what you've done and tried, and what you can do.

But you don't have leads for any puzzles right now.

This is the initial response. It changes as you progress through the game.

Vespers (2005)

You find it difficult to concentrate.

Violet (2008)

No. Do.

Voltage Cafe (2015)

  • Not one of your proudest talks. You thrashed that clown and ended up in anger management. Whatever, at least now they know your name.
  • Those IF games are what hooked you first. The play with words, the camaraderie, the creativity! Then you discovered the academic side-- how to think about it critically. That's what drew you into the degree program. Was it a mistake?
  • Yes, you know. You've got a sticker to remind you.
  • You respect your advisor very much. If only you didn't feel the need to hide from him whenever you haven't been working.... If only you could talk to him without fear of judgement.
  • You were so inspired by the experimental works of the Oulipo. Those "Exercises in Style" by Queneau blew you away.

Waiting for The End (2013)

Your mind circles back upon itself, unable to unravel The End.

A Walk Through Forever (2001)

  • [while watchin' TV:] This show isn't funny at all! It's terrible! You can't believe you wasted all this time watching it!

You leap to your feet, and turn off the TV.

In fact... there aren't any TV shows you like. Hell, you might as well get rid of the damn thing now! You'll have twice as much free time! Kick the habit! Reject mind control!

  • [while reading IF:] A voice from the audience calls out, "THINK!"

    "What a good idea."

  • [else:] No way, not since last time.

Walker & Silhouette (2009)

  • I intend to enter the Asylum, in case you were in any doubt. The door is traditional for this purpose.
  • (Talking to Ivy: morning, or trussed.)
  • [etc.]

The Water Bird (1999)

You'll have to be more specific as to what you want to think about.

The Waterhouse Women (2002)

You take a moment to consider your next move.

Also: The Fire Tower; The Invisible Argonaut.

The Weight of a Soul (2017)

Third of Aquaria, Auritum IV

I'm tired. I'm so tired.

I'm sorry, Reden. I hope your animus rests in peace.

Current objectives:

- Go home and get some sleep

Marid's notes:

- I'm in the mood for a drink...

The THINK command opens your journal, displaying Marid's current date, thoughts, objectives, and notes. This is just a representive sample near the start of the game.

Also: The Weight of a Soul.

You ponder your situation.

Lately you've been doing more of that.

When the Millennium Made Marvelous Moves (2024)

I thought a lot about Johanna and myself in the last weeks.

Where Nothing Is Ever Named (2024)

You remember nothing.

Why Pout? (2024)

An inner voice says "Fry! Twist!" You feel fright, wist. It's hard not to, since you don't have a name or a purpose. For some reason, you're focused on getting a name, but you've got thins nagging feeling that's not quite it.

Perhaps if you press a bit more, some thoughts may come out.

Winchester's Nightmare (1999)

So she does, earnestly. Her thought slips away.

Winter Wonderland (1999)

You spend a moment in contemplation.

The Wizard Sniffer (2017)

Being a pig, you are limited in what you can do.

Worlds Apart (1999)

What do you want to think?

Wormwood Days II: The Aftermath (2003)

Certainly.

Zero Chance of Recovery (2022)

Before you were knocked out, you remember the mercenaries and black king negotiating their deal: no payment unless the black pawn made it to h1! Why you remember this instead of any sort of combat plans to catch a fleeing enemy, you're not sure.

Zork: A Troll's Eye View (1998)

That's not your strong point.

Zozzled (2019)

You think about [one of] booze [or] the Charleston [or] flagpole sitting [or] feelas [or] goldfish swallowers [or] heavy petting [or] hooch [or] the stock market [at random].
