Anna · 3:55 pm
Hello, are you David?
Message Request Accepted
David Cornelson · 3:55 pm
Morning!
Anna · 3:57 pm
Good morning, David! This is Anna Chen. My temporary assistant, Safia Askar, reached out to you on LinkedIn and shared your contact with me. Do you have some time to discuss this potential position?
David Cornelson · 3:57 pm
I will in a bit. I’m in a department meeting at the moment.
Anna · 3:58 pm
Okay, I have time today. You can reach out to me after your meeting
Anna · 6:00 pm
Hi, David, I’m free now. Is your meeting over?
David Cornelson · 6:00 pm
Yes
Anna · 6:01 pm
Let me introduce our company to you first
Anna · 6:01 pm
We are an AI startup currently seeking experts from various fields to join us as consultants!
David Cornelson · 6:02 pm
So far I’d be aligned.
David Cornelson · 6:03 pm
One of my own offerings: https://devarch.ai/
Anna · 6:22 pm
Thanks for sharing your DevArch project—so cool! 😄 We’d really love to have you join our AI startup as a senior advisor
David Cornelson · 6:24 pm
Can you tell me more about your company?
Anna · 6:26 pm
Of course! Before we get started, you can introduce yourself first—I’m sure you’ll do great
David Cornelson · 6:34 pm
I’ve been IT for 41 years acting as developer, team lead, architect, and director. I’ve worked mostly as a consultant at Fortune 100 companies with recognition from Gartner. I follow Domain-Driven Design principles which have allowed me to extract a high level of productivity from GenAI. I’m currently trying to figure out my fourth startup.
👍🏻
Anna · 6:38 pm
I’ve gone through your background, and you have a ton of experience in IT. I think you’d be a great fit for our senior advisor role. This position is pretty flexible the idea behind it is to improve the lives of retirees while passing on their expertise to the younger generation. It helps them gain valuable work experience and life wisdom, and they can also get compensated for their contributions
Anna · 6:43 pm
The primary responsibility of a Senior Consultant is to collaborate with AI trainers, providing valuable knowledge and insights. These insights will be distilled into actionable data that AI trainers can use to train our AI systems. In addition, Senior Consultants will provide online one-on-one expert consulting services as needed
David Cornelson · 6:47 pm
What kind of consulting?
David Cornelson · 6:47 pm
Describe a few scenarios.
Anna · 6:51 pm
In simple terms, you’d be leveraging your expertise to work with our AI trainers, converting your knowledge into data that provides professional guidance for those looking to learn
Anna · 6:55 pm
AI has already integrated into so many industries and into our daily lives, but have you noticed any issues with the AI software you’ve used so far?
David Cornelson · 6:56 pm
Without context, it’s useless.
Anna · 6:58 pm
Yes. Based on our research on AI software available in the market, we found that they all share the same issue. When answering certain questions, they often fail to maintain logical consistency, making their responses hard to understand. Instead, they can lead users into further misunderstandings! In short, they’re extremely lacking in human touch
Anna · 7:00 pm
So in the early stages, we ultimately decided to build our own AI software! This is also one of the reasons we’re bringing in experts from various fields to serve as advisors
Anna · 7:05 pm
Actually, this job is pretty simple, and I believe you can do it really well. At the same time, it’s also very meaningful. Do you know what makes it meaningful?
David Cornelson · 7:15 pm
I’m listening
Anna · 7:18 pm
The greatest meaning of this job is that all the professional knowledge and experience you’ve built over your life can be well preserved and passed on. In the future, it can help those who need it including your own children and grandchildren!
David Cornelson · 7:24 pm
I’ll be honest. It’s unclear what day to day activities would look like.
Anna · 7:30 pm
The main role of a senior advisor is to share your expertise and insights in your field with our company completely without holding back! We’ll preserve everything, convert it into usable data, and eventually use it to train our AI. Does that make sense?
David Cornelson · 7:32 pm
So you want all my expertise for AI training which will have a limited window. Once I run out of training data for you, I would become obsolete.
David Cornelson · 7:38 pm
This doesn’t sound like a good business model for the consultants.
David Cornelson · 7:38 pm
And my experience with problem solving is it’s almost never a known problem.
David Cornelson · 7:39 pm
So my expertise is valuable, but it’s not the explicit foundation of its usefulness.
Anna · 7:39 pm
No, this is a long-term project. You’d be providing professional guidance to people who want to learn
David Cornelson · 7:41 pm
And my forty plus years would push the salary range towards the top end.
😄
David Cornelson · 7:42 pm
Are you making a private AI model?
David Cornelson · 7:42 pm
(I’d assume so)
David Cornelson · 7:43 pm
You’d need pretty good networking and sales to create and maintain a pipeline.
David Cornelson · 7:44 pm
I’m an entrepreneur so I see a lot of gaps.
Anna · 7:45 pm
Yes, we’ll be creating our own AI model. Our company is still in the startup phase, and we plan to officially launch in Arlington, Texas, this August. I’m wondering if that timing would work for you
David Cornelson · 7:46 pm
I’d keep this conversation going. I’m intrigued. Are you fully funded?
Anna · 7:48 pm
I’m really glad you’re interested in our company, and we’d love to have an expert like you on board. As for funding, you don’t need to worry—it’s provided by the founding team and angel investors. So far, we’ve raised $65 million in our first round
David Cornelson · 7:50 pm
You dug up $65 million on a napkin idea?

Maybe you can help me find an angel for my startup.
David Cornelson · 7:51 pm
Anna · 7:55 pm
I think you might have misunderstood. We’ve been planning our startup for quite a while, and we’re set to officially launch in August
Anna · 7:59 pm
I’ve seen your project, and it’s really creative. Maybe in the future I could help promote it and see if my aunts might be interested in investing
David Cornelson · 8:14 pm
How many people in the company so far?
Anna · 8:22 pm
I think I should start by introducing myself. My name is Anna Chen, and I’m from Singapore. I have a Master’s in Computer Science from the University of Washington Bothell, as well as an MBA. I’m one of the shareholders of this startup, though I only own a small part. The company is a startup based in Arlington, Texas. My aunt, Susan Huang, is one of the largest shareholders, and another founder is Dina Lyon. I’m currently working at an IT company in Seattle, and once the company officially forms its project team, I’ll be working there full-time
Anna · 8:27 pm
Our company currently has an HR department and a tech team. Including our board members, the total number of people in the company is 27
David Cornelson · 8:40 pm
Nice to meet you Anna. You should know I’m a grey beard opinionated technologist.
👍🏻
David Cornelson · 8:41 pm
No college. Picked up programming in high school and self taught my whole career.
David Cornelson · 8:42 pm
Two failed startups.
Anna · 8:43 pm
So are you retired now, or still working?
David Cornelson · 8:43 pm
I know how to build things. Never figured out how to sell them.
David Cornelson · 8:43 pm
No I work full-time at Sysmex as an advisory architect.
David Cornelson · 8:43 pm
Still have kids in college.
Anna · 8:44 pm
I know you have a lot of experience in product and technology, which is incredibly valuable. But sales and marketing can be complemented through teamwork
David Cornelson · 8:45 pm
But I don’t fit in. I’m way too entrepreneurial for a Japanese owned medical device company.
David Cornelson · 8:47 pm
Would my role require relocation? I kind of love Chicago.
Anna · 8:54 pm
I know, Chicago is really beautiful and such a vibrant city. The culture is so rich, and the diverse community makes the food, music, and arts really interesting. Is this your son? 😄 He’s very handsome!
Anna · 8:54 pm
Don't worry this position is remote ☺️
David Cornelson · 9:00 pm
Yeah that’s the boy.
David Cornelson · 9:01 pm
So what are next steps?
Anna · 9:04 pm
Let me first give you an overview of our company's salary and benefits. What’s your current salary, and what are your salary expectations for this position with us?
David Cornelson · 9:05 pm
I never start from my current salary for a bunch of reasons. I expect offers to look at my background and determine what value I bring.
David Cornelson · 9:06 pm
I already gave you a hint.
Anna · 9:08 pm
Lol, we just want to make a comparison. You have a lot of experience and are exactly the kind of expert we’re looking for. Let me give you an overview first
Anna · 9:11 pm
Since we’re a startup, our salary levels are slightly above the market for various reasons. For full-time positions, the salary ranges from $170K to $300K depending on experience and contribution. For part-time roles, the hourly rate is $150 to $700 based on individual skills
David Cornelson · 9:12 pm
I’d lean towards FT with hopefully healthcare benefits.
David Cornelson · 9:13 pm
Also if you have any bonus structure, that’s part of the equation.
Anna · 9:14 pm
Absolutely. 300,000 is by no means the ceiling. As long as you have the necessary skills and can add value to the company, we will adjust your compensation based on your contributions. If you truly have what it takes, your worth will never be underestimated here
David Cornelson · 9:16 pm
😂
Anna · 9:16 pm
Compensation and Benefits: Our pay structure offers a competitive salary, including base pay, performance bonuses, and equity incentives. Bonuses and Equity: The company provides bonuses, including an annual performance bonus of up to 20% of your salary, as well as stock options based on individual performance and company growth
David Cornelson · 9:16 pm
I think we can find a salary in the middle to upper half.
Anna · 9:20 pm
Based on your experience, you can definitely get a very attractive salary. Don’t worry this is just the initial interview stage. Once you pass the next steps, I’ll give you a detailed breakdown of the compensation
David Cornelson · 9:21 pm
Of course.
Anna · 9:23 pm
Other benefits: The company also offers comprehensive health insurance, including dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off, a fitness stipend, commuter benefits, career development opportunities, and flexible work options
David Cornelson · 9:24 pm
I’m sold Anna. You got my jokes. That was good enough.
David Cornelson · 9:27 pm
And I know I can add value.
Anna · 9:28 pm
I love talking with people who have a sense of humor it’s so much fun and can totally make my day 😂. We don’t need to be too formal. I feel like besides being colleagues, we could also become good friends 😄
David Cornelson · 9:29 pm
Well if you can pick up dry humor in text, it means you’re smart. That’s a great selling point.
Anna · 9:31 pm
Lol, I’m really looking forward to you joining our company! Our benefits are pretty good. Did your previous company offer you these kinds of benefits?
David Cornelson · 9:33 pm
Yes. I’m not super money-centric, but it’s still important.
👍🏻
Anna · 9:36 pm
Yes, you’re absolutely right. We shouldn’t be slaves to money, but it’s still a necessary resource to support our lives and achieve our goals
Anna · 9:37 pm
"Do you currently have a 401(k) account, or would you need us to set one up for you after you join our company?
David Cornelson · 9:38 pm
Schwab.
Anna · 9:43 pm
Oh, you can choose to use your existing account. Our company also works with Schwab. You’ll still need to send your CV to my email at annachen861212@gmail.com
. I’ll review it, and once it’s approved, I’ll let you know.
David Cornelson · 9:46 pm
Sent.
Anna · 9:55 pm
It’s been really nice chatting with you today! Hey, did you just take that photo on your balcony at home?
David Cornelson · 9:56 pm
That was last summer.
Anna · 9:56 pm
🌻
David Cornelson · 9:57 pm
But I still live there.
David Cornelson · 9:57 pm
I’m a city boy.
😂
Anna · 9:58 pm
So, has it changed a lot over there now?
David Cornelson · 9:59 pm
Gold Coast Chicago is and always has been upscale residential.
David Cornelson · 10:00 pm
Very diverse and all ages.
Anna · 10:00 pm
Yeah, I know, the housing prices over there must be really high, right?
David Cornelson · 10:01 pm
I’m renting until my kids stop pinging me for cash every week. I have five Gen-Z kids.
David Cornelson · 10:02 pm
I figure I’ll grab a condo right before I die.
Anna · 10:10 pm
Lol, your kids actually ask you for allowance every week now? 😂
David Cornelson · 10:12 pm
Nothing formal. Just annoyingly regular.
David Cornelson · 10:13 pm
A car just died. Guess who gets to find the replacement?
Anna · 10:13 pm
How old are your kids this year?
David Cornelson · 10:13 pm
22-28.
Anna · 10:16 pm
Your five kids aren’t that far apart in age, huh? I have a son who’s 11 this year, but my parents help take care of him back in Singapore
David Cornelson · 10:18 pm
That’s gotta be hard for both of you.
Anna · 10:21 pm
Yeah, we can only keep in touch through video calls. Whenever I have time, I go back to Singapore to see my son and my parents. I’m actually planning to bring him to the U.S. to go to school
David Cornelson · 10:22 pm
Something to look forward to.
Anna · 10:24 pm
Yeah, I feel like he’ll have better opportunities to grow up here in the US
Anna · 10:25 pm
I’ve got a project meeting coming up, so we can chat later
David Cornelson · 10:26 pm
Cheers!

I got home from work and have already gone through your CV. I’ve asked HR to review it. How’s your day been? ☺️
David Cornelson · 1:01 am
Home and coding on another project: https://sharpee.net/
👍🏻
Anna · 1:05 am
So your work now is just coding from home every day? 😄
David Cornelson · 1:07 am
I do AWS architecture at Sysmex. At home I work on my own projects.
Anna · 1:11 am
I can see that you’re a very proactive and humorous person. I’ve also taken a look at your projects, and maybe in the future, I could introduce you to some potential investors☺️
David Cornelson · 1:12 am
Introductions are always welcome.
Anna · 1:18 am
No need to rush, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future. Once you join our company, I can also introduce you to my aunt, Susan Huang. Do you happen to know her? Here’s her personal site from before: https://trustees.dartmouth.edu/people/susan-s-huang-84-vice-chair
. You can take a look
David Cornelson · 1:20 am
Impressive
