Charles de Lint is one of the best and most original writers in fantasy today.
His stories have modern settings, but echo ancient mythic beliefs.

a disturbing retelling of the ballad, but in the end very beautiful.)
Robin McKinley

(1982)]. (A wonderful, elegant, absolutely beautiful fairy tale of a young
princess kidnapped to be a bride in the Otherworld).
Melaine Tem
- "The Changelings" [from Snow White, Blood Red collection]
Joan D. Vinge
- "Tam Lin" [published in Imaginary Lands, Robin McKinley, ed.] (A
good, traditional retelling of the Tam Lin story.)
Vivian Vande Velde
Author of several fantasy novels published by Jane Yolen Books.
- "Lost Soul" [published in A Wizard's Dozen, Michael Sterns, ed.
(1993)]. (A tale of a perilous romance with a river spirit.)
Sylvia Townsend Warner
Late author of many poems, novels, short stories, and essays. Her Elfin
stories were often published in the New Yorker, and then collected in
her Kingdoms of Elfin book.
- "The Duke of Orkney's Castle" [published in Selected Stories
(1990)] (An Elfin story not published before (i.e. not in Kingdoms of
Elfin))
Jane Yolen
Jane Yolen has written hundreds of stories, many of which touch on ancient
themes from folklore and myth. Her writing is beautiful, and she is one of my
favorite authors.
- "Harlyn's Fairy" [published in A Wizard's Dozen, Michael Sterns, ed.
(1993)].
- "The River Maid" [originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and
Science Fiction (1981)]. (A man dams a river and takes a river spirit as
his lover, thinking he has tamed both her and the river. He is mistaken.)
- "The Thirteenth Fey" [originally published in Faery! (1985)]. (A
humorous retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of the
13th fairy, the one who was uninvited and cursed Sleeping Beauty)
- "The Undine" [originally published in Neptune Rising (1981)).]
(A melancholy retelling of The Little Mermaid, cruel and realistic.)
