Key & Compass presents:
Zugzwang
by Vanessa Jygon and Eleanor Jimmy

Zugzwang is a Z-machine interactive fiction game written with Inform 7 and is © 2024 by Vanessa Jygon and Eleanor Jimmy. It was an entry in Parsercomp 2024, where it took 3rd place in the Classic Class.

In this small chess-themed game about skill-acquistion, you play as the Last Pawn deep in enemy territory. The sacrifices of your brothers-in-arms shall not be in vain. Learn the secret attacks of your foes and use them against each other until you become the weapon that was lost.

This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 1 of the game.

SPOILERS AHEAD. Reading a walkthrough prematurely can sometimes diminish one's enjoyment of an interactive fiction game. Please make an honest effort to play the game before reading this walkthrough.

Oh, and "zugzwang" is a chess term from German that means "move-compulsion". It refers to those situations where you'd prefer to wait and do nothing, because anything you do is likely going to make things worse, but choosing inaction just isn't one of your options.
