Key & Compass presents:
Weary Eerie Way
by Andrew Schultz

Weary Eerie Way is a Z-machine interactive fiction game written with Inform 7 and is © 2021 by Andrew Schultz. It was an entry in the La Petite Mort (English) division of Ectocomp 2021 where it took 11th Place. It is also a sequel to Under They Thunder from IF Comp 2020.

In this acky-way-wacky wordplay game, you are dreaming. You just crashed your blimp in Blimp Limp Bay, but fortunately, local weirdo Ump-Gray-Grump will fix it for you. Ah-Yay Yah! But he needs you to find a part to fix it with. Rat-Day Drat!

This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 1 of the game.

SPOILERS AHEAD. Reading a walkthrough prematurely can sometimes diminish one's enjoyment of an interactive fiction game. Please make an honest effort to play the game before reading this walkthrough.

Walkthrough

Blimp Limp Bay

You crashland a blimp. Ump-Gray-Grump offers to fix it for you, but they need something to fix it with.

Oh, and you need to avoid the Urp-Slay-Slurp. I forget if it wants to eat you or read you some of its poetry, but it's a nasty piece of work. Made a Nana bay "Banana!".

> verbs. (The four compass directions and USE are all you need.)

> n.

Roar Day Drawer

No, you can't SOCK DRAWER. Sorry, but that's not the sort of wordplay we're doing here. That drawer's in the Argh Aisle.

> e. (it blocks you)

> s. (You get an id-Lay Lid.)

Blimp Limp Bay

> e.

Bill-Ill Bay

> n. (Not-Say Snot stops you.)

> w. (You get Weak-Eek Whey.)

Blimp Limp Bay

> n.

Roar Day Drawer

> use whey on drawer. (+1; drawer leaves. It has a certain whey about it.)

> e. (Not yet.)

> s. e.

Bill-Ill Bay

> use lid on snot. (+1; snot leaves.)

> n.

X Ray Wrecks

Okay, you need to backtrack at least once from here before continuing.

> w.

Ate-Cray Crate (formerly Roar Day Drawer)

Oh, right, without the drawer here, the room name had to change. You're not upset are you? It's not like your favorite restaurant got replaced with a vape shop. Sigh. But things do change, don't they?

> e. e.

Sneer Near, Say

> w. (You get a Cram Say Scram.)

X Ray Wrecks

> n.

Stirrer Stay

> s. (You get a Kill Say Skill.)

X Ray Wrecks

> e.

Snear Near, Say

> use skill on slump. (+1; slump leaves.)

> w. n.

Stirrer Stay

> use scram on slug. (+1; slug leaves.)

> e.

Craze-Raise Cay

> s. (You get a 'E'll-Stay Steel.)

> n. w.

Stirrer Stay

> i. (You have a Hard-Say Shard)

> s. s.

Bill-Ill Bay

You now have a Own-Gray-Groan. You just needed to retreat this far away from Skull.

> n. n. e.

Craze-Raise Cay

> use groan on skull. (+1; skull gone)

Okay, the next thing you must do is go every direction from every location, then go to X Ray Wrecks. It's not the locations that matter, but the traversals. Do a figure-eight in one direction:

> s. w. w. s. e. n. n. e.

Now, turn around and do another figure-eight in the other direction:

> w. s. s. w. n. e. e. n.

Now go to X Ray Wrecks:

> w. s.

X Ray Wrecks

You now have a Rope Gay-Grope for going every away way.

> w. s.

Steer 'Ere Stay (formerly Blimp Limp Bay)

> use grope on ump. (+1)

*** Winnin' Way! ***

Extras

Characters

Honestly, I don't know what any on these creatures actually are. Some may be people. Some may be animals. Some may be animated furniture. I don't know. They're all amorphous blobs with weird nametags as far I'm concerned.

Credits

This is the response to CREDITS:

Weary Eerie Way is an entry in the 2021 EctoComp Petite Mort (English version) and was a spinoff of my IFComp 2020 game, Under They Thunder. It was originally written for 2020 EctoComp, but I forgot the deadline was early October 31 and not the end of the day.

After UTT sprawled on me (I went from being glad there was anything at all to having too much,) I sat down and limited myself to amusingly ("amusingly") surreal stuff and the best ideas that didn't fit. And this popped out.

The release version, due to the time limit, had no testers, but I would like to thank my testers from UTT and all who played it, as well as Olaf Nowacki for moral support. He has an entry in the Petite Mort too! Oh, and the IFComp 2021 authors' subforum. Several of them entered something, too!

I would also like to thank JJ Guest for creating EctoComp, Duncan Bowsman for stepping in and Ruber Eaglenest for running it currently, and itch.io for hosting EctoComp and other comps that help me just remember to play others' stuff.

And thanks to svgrepo.com for the blimp SVG for the cover art.

Inventory

You'll pick these up automatically as you find them. You can't usefully examine anything in this game, only use them on other characters.
