Extras
Characters
The Master stands by, waiting to see if you can pass this test.
A servant, nearly unnoticed, removes the end slices after you slice the loaf.
Some attendants gasp when you turn on the toaster, cheer when you succeed in the test, or lead you away if you fail.
Mentioned:
Your elder brother gave you your katana after he was defeated in this very kitchen.
Hiroyuki, presumably your younger brother, will inherit your katana if you fail this test.
Endings
In Release 1:
You have died
if you put your katana into the toaster,
or if you turn on the toaster without any bread in it,
or if you drop the slices of bread,
or if you eat the toast,
or if you drop the toast.
You have won if you give the toast to the Master.
In Release 3, the endings are haikus:
If you put your katana into the toaster: powerful blue fire coursing through your sword and hand now you are quite dead
If you turn on the toaster without any bread in it: the lever goes down the elements glow red-hot their heat is wasted
If you eat the slices of bread: popped into your mouth perfect slice of sandwich bread could have used some jam
If you drop the slices of bread: down, end over end like snowflakes square and mealy now food for the mice
If you drop the toast: toast falls, unbuttered on which side has it landed? you: too dead to know
If you eat the cold toast: toast: ennobled bread for this one faces all risks cold toast, not so much
If you give cold toast to the Master: serving suggestion fatally disregarded best if served while hot
If you eat the hot toast: click, wait wait wait, pop! through patience: your perfect toast you: happy (and dead)
If you give hot toast to the Master: crisp and brown and fine the toast, like an autumn day an old man laughing
