Monkeys and Car Keys is a Z-machine interactive fiction game written with Inform 6 and is © 2025 by Jim Fisher. It was an entry in IF Comp 2025 where it took 23rd place.
After being lost in the jungle for hours, you finally find your Jeep again, now trashed by small brown monkeys. Then a large, yellow primate climbs out of the backseat and strides away with your car keys! You give chase, of course, then find yourself at a rock wall. You see no monkeys. You can hear monkeys. But can you speak to monkeys?
This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 1 of the game.
SPOILERS AHEAD. Reading a walkthrough prematurely can sometimes diminish one's enjoyment of an interactive fiction game. Please make an honest effort to play the game before reading this walkthrough.

The western statue translates English to Monkey and vice-versa. You can usually abbreviate any monkey phrase to its first word.

The statue replies: "Car keys...? You mean the shinys? Grok took them because he likes shinys. He keeps them in the nest of the ancients. You'll need Blind Mama Ciedue's flat banana and secret monkey words if you want your shinys back."
You ask the statue, "Where is the flat banana and what are the secret monkey words?" It replies, "Hua chichi bine hua oca muwato."

The ladder is pulled upwards and is now a bridge. The baby monkeys from the far barrel climb up the vine back to Mama.

A baby monkey named Murk has the flat banana.
> say Murk to baby. (It's too young to understand.)

> give pack to Murk. (Murk drops the stone, takes the package, and leaves.)

Murk reappears, smiling, and holds his arms up to you.

Murk points up at the eastern cliff wall.
> put Murk on ivy. (+2. Murk climbs up. Eventually, a long heavy bar falls at your feet, then Murk returns.)

The north statue's function is to read the symbols on the flat banana.

CAUTION: If you wait too long after inserting the banana to say the secret monkey words, the mouth spits the banana out, the ear closes, and the eye re-opens.

The wall opens like a garage door and Grok comes out like a boxer. He hits you!
Don't hesitate to fight back. If you try to do anything else, you lose the fight and the game. And you must have Murk with you to distract Grok during one round.
> hit Grok with iron. g. g. (+4)
You get your keys, but the watching monkeys are now upset. "Arck arck eek jarg jarg!" You run back to your Jeep.

Oh, in case you're curious, if you restart the game and return to the western statue:
