The Lost Islands of Alabaz is a Glulx interactive fiction game written with Inform 7 and is © 2011 by Michael Gentry. It was entered in Spring Thing 2011 where it won 1st place. At the 2011 XYZZY Awards, the game was a finalist for the Best Supplemental Materials award for its almanac.
In this children's adventure story, you play as a King's Knight. For fifty years, the Alabaz Archipelago has been shrouded in a thick gray mist that no ship can navigate through. But now, King Alexander himself has found a magic pearl that may be the key to breaking the curse. Your quest, brave knight, is to take this pearl and your new ship, the Dauntless, and discover the lost islands of Alabaz.
This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 2 of the game.
What is your name, brave Knight? your-first-name.

Okay, I have an idea. Try to break the boulder with ice, since ice expands. You'll plant the very tiny icefruit seed in the boulder's crack and water it with fresh water to create the ice. So... you'll need the watering can from Junque and the fresh water itself from the greenhouse on Shaddhar. This is a bit of a bother, isn't it?

From the response to ABOUT:
The Lost Islands of Alabaz was written from 2009 to 2011, and won first place in the 2011 Spring Thing competition (www.springthing.net). This is Release 2. Type CREDITS to see the list of testers.
This is a children's story. I wrote it for my own children. The tone, vocabulary, and reading level are all aimed at children. In this last effort I have not been very consistent, unfortunately. When I began writing Alabaz, my kids were 5 years old. Since that time, they have aged 2 years and their reading abilities have progressed well past the standard for their grade level, and my own writing inadvertantly shifted along with them.
The game is intended also to teach young readers how to play it, as they play it. The first chapter, from the start of play to leaving Alabazapolis, is essentially a tutorial. The journal and Trig together are a combined hint system. This might be off-putting for more experienced readers. If you find it so, simply type NORMAL to switch the game to a less didactic mode.
Although Alabaz is a children's story, and although it does have a moral (albeit fairly noncontroversial, more of a gentle admonition, really), this is not, particularly, a game about being a story, or about imparting moral lessons. It is, first and foremost, a game about being a text adventure game. Its aims are to be silly and puzzly and possibly charming and not very difficult. I tried to include in it everything that I fell in love with when I first discovered Zork at the age of 8, and my highest aspiration for it is that children who play this game now might find it as absorbing as I found that game then.
But it's also fine if you just enjoy playing it.

Pearls | Food | Junk | Readables | Seeds | Other items
Put all pearls into the indentations in the ship's wheel at Poop Deck. Turn the wheel to a pearl to select the ship's new destination. Raise the anchor and you're on your way!
Note that you don't actually get the silver pearl. Merely touching it summons the queen, and she puts her crown on immediately afterwards.
Some junk is useful. Some isn't.
