You play as someone who moved to New York City a month ago. It's a shame Katherine chose to stay behind, because thanks to your online friend Miseri, you've got an invitation to go to Mr DeMause's Halloween Masque tonight, but he failed to give you directions. And it's a pea-souper outside too.

This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 1 of the work.

Characters

The closest thing to an NPC in this game is the disembodied hand, but there are other characters mentioned:

Katherine's relationship to the player-character isn't explicitly described. She might be the PC's wife, girlfriend, or perhaps a very close friend.
Miseri is an online friend of yours, but he managed to carve a pumpkin for your porch.
Mr deMause is described as eccentric and has an apartment in New York City.

Inventory

a red glass. It's in your initial inventory. Drop it at Washington Square to lure the hand to you.
an earring. Find it by searching the mess in your apartment. It contains a stone.
a stone. It's in the earring. Take it from its setting. Put the stone in the signet ring that the disembodied hand is wearing.
a note. It's inside the Jack O'Lantern on the porch. Read the note.
a disembodied hand. Originally seen emerging from the Jack O'Lantern on your porch, you see it again at Washington Square where it seems attracted to red and repelled by green. Drop the red glass to lure it near you, then you can take it. It will direct you to Mr deMause's party after you put the stone in the signet ring it wears.
