Key & Compass presents:
Chicken and Egg
by Adam Thornton

Chicken and Egg is a Z-machine interactive fiction game written with Inform 6 and is © 1998 by Adam Thornton. It was a participant in the ChickenComp event.

In this one-room "potboiler", you play as a captured spy strapped into an interrogation chair, a setting borrowed from Spider and Webb. You've already told your interrogator almost everything, including how you recaptured the defector inside the enemy facility. Soon, your career as a spy will be at an end.

This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 1 of the game.

Make note of the keywords "Hokey" and "Pokey" mentioned in the introduction.

Interrogation Chamber, In the Chair

You have six turns to examine your surroundings.

> x restraints. x chair. x interrogator. x desk.

> x me. ask interrogator about machine.

After six turns, the game enters into menu mode for the interrogation. Use your keyboard's up and down arrow keys to highlight your desired response and push ENTER to select it. You can also use N (next) and P (previous) to scroll through your options.

"Why did ...?" >> "To get to the Other Side."

"Did it ever ...?" >> "Yes."or"No."

"Do you even know ...?" >> ANY-ANSWER

Soldiers bring a cage and a box into the room at this point.

"Which came first ...?" >> ANY-ANSWER ("The egg." is the most satisifying answer here, in my humble opinion.)

You can now try normal actions again.

> x chicken. x box. xyzzy.

> hokey. (The caged chicken is killed and fried.)

The interrogator frees you, then offers you a drumstick and a job.
