Key & Compass presents:
The Carthage Corn Maze
by Anonymous

The Carthage Corn Maze is a TADS 2 interactive fiction game and is © 2001 by Anonymous. It was an entry in the Speed-IF Third Anniversary event.

In this minimalist game, you and your dog Granta have come to Carthage on vacation to visit a prize-filled corn maze. Inside the maze, you'll both be questing to find a Magic Pumpkin. Meanwhile, Voodoo Pimp Daddy wants the gold key as his prize.

Carthage Maize Maze entrance

All you need to do is have the magic pumpkin in your inventory outside the maze. Because the actions of VPD and Granta are randomized and interfere with your actions, a normal walkthrough won't be of much help.

The simplest way to "win" is simply to wait outside the maze until Granta drops the pumpkin there, then pick it up.

You might also try heading straight to the locked door in the Leather room, wait until someone unlocks it, then rush in, pick up the pumpkin, and head back to the start. If you're lucky, maybe Granta won't attack you, or her attacks will fail en route.

> z. (Repeat waiting until the pumpkin's dropped here.)

> take pumpkin.

The maximal challenge is to get the gold key from the Yacht room, unlock the door in the leather room, take the pumpkin, and exit the maze with it, evading all attacks from VPD and Granta (or UNDOing each time their attack succeeds and retrying). Assuming VPD and Granta aren't interfering with you, your moves would be:

> w. s. sw. u.

Yacht room.

> take key. d. ne. e. n. n. n.

Leather room

> unlock door. e.

pumpkin room

> take pumpkin. w. s. s. e.

*** You have won ***

The characters will attack you if you're carrying something they want, hoping you'll drop the item. Their attacks usually succeed, but not quite always. There doesn't seem to be any way to attack them barehandedly in return, which seems rather unfair.

The characters will also drop their respective prizes at the entrance when they succeed, allowing you (or the other character) to pick it up. Granta will

This walkthrough is provided free of charge since I wrote this walkthrough prior to January 2015 when I began my Patreon account, and also because the work it's based on has less than fifteen locations (so I wouldn't have charged for it anyway). I've since reformatted this walkthrough to use my currently preferred style. I hope you enjoy it!

I'm still creating new walkthroughs! Larger ones too! Please visit my Patreon account if you're interested in helping me create more interactive fiction walkthroughs. I appreciate all the help I can get! Thanks again.
