Key & Compass presents:
Alana's Dungeon
by Alana Armstrong and Clyde Falsoon

Alana's Dungeon is a Glulx interactive fiction game written with Inform 7 and is © 2026 by Alana Armstrong and Clyde Falsoon. It was an entry in IF Comp 2026, placement to be determined.

In this small adventure, you might be anyone standing beside two locked chests in a meadow. At the other end of the meadow is an unlocked cabinet and stairs down into a dungeon where you might win a prize fit for a princess!

This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Release 1 of the game.

SPOILERS AHEAD. Reading a walkthrough prematurely can sometimes diminish one's enjoyment of an interactive fiction game. Please make an honest effort to play the game before reading this walkthrough.

Walkthrough

West Meadow

> x grain. x fence.

> x wooden. (locked)

> x golden. (locked)

> e.

East Meadow

> x stairs. x cabinet. open it. x key. take it.

> w.

West Meadow

> unlock wooden with key. open it.

> x armor. wear it.

> x sword. take it. wield it.

> e. d.

East Basement

The stairs retract, trapping you here.

> x desk. (too far from torch to see well)

> take torch.

> x desk. (has four drawers)

> open drawer. (which?)

Whichever drawer you open is empty but makes a screech that wakes something unpleasant to the west. The brass key is in the third drawer you open, whichever drawer that is. Likewise, the steel key will be in the fourth drawer you open.

> open top left. (empty)

> open top right. (empty)

> open bottom left. (glint seen)

> look in it. take brass key.

> open bottom right. (something slides)

> look in it. take steel key.

> w.

West Basement

> x orc. (has tusks and a gold key)

> x cage.

> save (In case you lose the upcoming battle.)

> unlock cage with brass key.

The orc is now attacking you, but it only attacks when you do (or open its cage), and it doesn't follow you if you go back to the desk. As monsters go, it is very polite.

> diagnose. (15/15 HP and AC = 14, if the orc misses you in its first attack.)

HP means Hit Points and AC means Armor Class. This is not explained in the game because the authors assume this is common knowledge. Whenever you take damage, it is subtracted from your Hit Points. If your Hit Points reaches 0 or less, you are dead.

Combat damage is randomized. Damage is only dealt to either of you when you attack the orc. You deal more damage with a wielded sword, and you take less damage if you're wearing armor.

I tend to UNDO attacks where the orc hits and I miss. I am not above using UNDO to win a battle.

> kill orc. g. g. g. g. g. (Repeat trying to kill the orc until you slice its head off!)

> take gold key.

> e.

East Basement

It's unusual to require a player to examine something they're told is no longer there.

> x stairs. (A keyhole is where the staircase was.)

> unlock stairs with steel key.

> u. w.

West Meadow

> unlock golden chest with gold key.

> open it. take prize.
